Crimson Moon: How did the band get started?
Dave: We started in 2019 when Myself (Dave) and Gerard began writing new music together after our last band had split up. We knew both Jay and Mick from separate projects and it wasn’t long before we all got together and started writing our first EP “Tempered Hearts”.
Crimson Moon: What kind of music do you play?
Dave: We struggle to find a genre that fits our music, so we tend to file it under Heavy Alternative Rock.
Crimson Moon: How has the band response been?
Dave: So far it has been fantastic. Last year alone our music was listened to across 80 countries worldwide and given we had only played a handful of local shows before Lock Down we are very happy with the response from everyone who has been kind enough to listen.
Crimson Moon: Where did the band name come from?
Dave: So ForeignWolf has two parts, the cliché Wolf Pack concept in that we all formed together to create a new band, and the fact that when we first formed we had all come from separate projects at the time and were “Foreign” to each other in a sense.
Crimson Moon: How many albums/CD’s have you released?
Dave: We have just released our 2nd EP “Your Weapons, Your Words” this year back in May, as well as our Debut EP “Tempered Hearts” back in 2019. Currently we are now working on what will be our first Album and we hope to have that ready for early 2022.
Crimson Moon: Tell me about some of the songs on the latest CD?
Dave: “Your Weapons, Your Words” tells a story that comes from very real situations that each member of the band has had to deal with in some shape or form during our life. It starts with “Alone” which talks about a destructive relationship that you are too afraid to leave as you cannot cope with the alternative which is too be “Alone”, this then leads into “Afterthought”, a song that takes the idea that you are in a relationship with depression and how that effects your life on a day to day basis. After slipping into a depression from the initial break up you know turn to addiction which is the main idea for “No Limit”, and finally when you eventually reach rock bottom we come to “Gradual Destruction (of an already broken man)” which starts slow but has an epiphany ending where you realize everything is going to be just fine.
Crimson Moon: Who writes the music? Lyrics?
Dave: We all have a part in both the music and lyrics. Anyone with an idea is always listened too. Each member has a significantly different music taste, so it just wouldn’t work if only one person tried to write everything.
Crimson Moon: And where do the lyric ideas come from?
Dave: All our lyrics come from real life experiences that each member has encountered. Be it bad break ups, Mental or even as far as political beliefs, we just like to speak our mind and be open about what has made us…well Us.
Crimson Moon: Has the Covid Pandemic impacted the band at all?
Dave: Apart from the obvious of not being able to tour or play shows, we have stayed active. We have kept writing and recording, stayed on top of social media, and tried to just expand our audience as best we can. As a result, we feel we have become a stronger band than if we had been able to go out and tour. Focusing on more of a business side to the music has really helped us grow and learn, to the extent that in July of this year we were Signed to Wormhole Death Records and will be releasing “Your Weapons, Your Words” Worldwide on October 22nd.
Crimson Moon: Do you have any side projects?
Dave: We all work full time, so outside of that ForeignWolf takes up the rest of our free time really.
Crimson Moon: What is the music scene like where you guys are from?
Dave: Belfast is pretty diverse when it comes to music and has a massive scene considering it isn’t a big city. At night anywhere you go you will hear live music being played by some of the finest musicians you will ever come across. It is a tight knit scene but welcomes anyone who can play.
Crimson Moon: Who are some of your musical influences?
Dave: Our main shared influences would be bands from the late 90’s early 20’s. Deftones, Alexisonfire, Linkin Park and Thrice to name a few.
Crimson Moon: What is the band like when you play live?
Dave: Coming up to a live show we will typically rehearse 2-3 times a week, making sure everything is tight and ready to go. Once we start playing a show however we just want to have fun and enjoy all the hard work we have put in. It is high energy, sweaty and non stop from the first chord.
Crimson Moon: Have you guys ever played in another country?
Dave: In previous bands, yes we have all toured but with ForeignWolf we had really only started when everything locked down. We had a tour scheduled for May of this year which has now been postponed until 2022.
Crimson Moon: How has the fan response been to the band?
Dave: It has been way beyond what we could have ever expected. We have had people from all around the world contact us directly saying how much they love the music. I think the first one that really blew our mind was someone from Brazil sent us a message just after we released our first EP. Most of the bands we have been in didn’t have “fans”, so for us to get a response like this is just genuinely humbling.
Crimson Moon: What made you want to be in this band?
Dave: I think we all agree we wanted to be in this band because not only do we all bring something different to the table musically, but we all really get on well with each other and it has made it more than a band for us and more of a passion.
Crimson Moon: If you weren’t in this band would you still be involved in the music industry?
Dave: 100%, I (Dave) would want to be Music Management, Mick is currently studying Music Production, Gerard loves the recording and production side of music as well and Jay works in a music shop.
Crimson Moon: As a musician what advice can you give to fellow musician just starting out?
Dave: I think the best advice is to just be constant. If you are always writing, gigging, posting on social media and just being active, it is the best way to gain traction and continue to move forward.
Crimson Moon: What does the future hold for the band?
Dave: As we said we have just signed with Wormhole Death Records and are Scheduled to release our EP “Your Weapons, Your Words” worldwide through them on the 22nd October this year. Along with that we have a tour now scheduled for early next year as well as a few local shows towards the end of this year. And to top it all off we are currently writing our Debut Album which will hopefully be ready for release next year to coincide with the tour.
