Fall In Autumn

Crimson Moon: How did the band get started?

Jennifer: Fall in Autumn began with me jamming on guitar at home, usually through the night and early morning through my seasons of insomnia. I had written many riffs and lyrics over the years and when I set up my home studio I was able to start to layer and jam on what I had, which evolved the music into songs.

Crimson Moon: What kind of music do you play?
Jennifer: The music is hard for me to put into one category, but I best describe it as dark rock.

Crimson Moon: How has the fan response been?
Jennifer: The response has been great and is increasing as it reaches more people. I think a lot of listeners appreciate the combinations of genres and it revives sounds they feel nostalgic about from their past.

Crimson Moon: Where did the band name come from?
Jennifer: The name Fall in Autumn comes from how I describe my approaching winter dark times. I call it, “my downfall in autumn”.

Crimson Moon: Introduce the band members.
Jennifer: I am a one-woman band.  Jennifer McInnis 😉 Guitars, vocals, bass.

Crimson Moon: How many albums/CD’s have you released?
Jennifer: So far a two-track single, and the newest released single. More to come!

Crimson Moon: Tell me about some of the songs on the latest CD.
Jennifer: “This Dark Night” is a song about the unknown, ritual, naivety, and paths one can choose to follow or are lured into.

Crimson Moon: Who writes the music? Lyrics?
Jennifer: I write the music and lyrics.

Crimson Moon: And where do the lyric ideas come from?

Jennifer: Lyrical ideas can come to me through the guitar riffs and melodies. Words start to whisper through as the music evolves and I build on that. I sometimes draw from lyrics and writings I have already written in the past which compliments the feel of the song.

Crimson Moon: Has the Covid Pandemic impacted the band at all?
Jennifer: It hasn’t had an effect on the band.

Crimson Moon: Do you have any side projects?
Jennifer: I have a black/thrash solo project brewing which I hope to make some progress with this year.

Crimson Moon: What is the music scene like where you guys are from?
Jennifer: I lived in Bergen, Norway for 15 years, and the music scene in Norway is amazing. Many bands, musicians, and people with an extreme love and passion for music. I am now in Canada, during Covid, so I can’t really say how the scene is as I haven’t really experienced it properly yet, but I have to keep the bar pretty low after living in Bergen! 😉

Crimson Moon: Who are some of your musical influences?
Jennifer: Most of my influences aren’t really what you’d expect, but I was a teen in the 90s, which means I’m a huge grunge fan and that you can hear in Fall in Autumn. More than anything though, I’m a die-hard metalhead. Bay area thrash; old Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Testament. Black metal; Bathory, Venom, Celtic Frost, Norwegian black metal etc. Old and classic proper metal; Iron Maiden, Judas Priest etc and I have to mention Rush as well 😉
Also, I grew up with a Mom that loved classic country and Celtic music so some of that was probably absorbed in me too. It’s a weird mix!

Crimson Moon: What made you want to be in this band?
Jennifer: Fall in Autumn’s evolution was a bit of a process for me to get to this point. It was daunting at first, especially with it being the first project I’ve ever released in addition to doing it alone. One feels very vulnerable. It can also be a challenge to be your own motivator and critic. I wouldn’t say I prefer it, as I have played and written music with other musicians over the years, but I definitely enjoy the process and challenge of working solo, and it’s very satisfying to create something which is completely your own.

Crimson Moon: If you weren’t in this band would you still be involved in the music industry?
Jennifer: I’d definitely be working on another project/band and I do have other projects in the works. I’ve been working at various metal festivals since 2014, as well as having my own event company in Norway. I have also been a DJ at metal bars and festivals since 2017, so I always find something aside from my own stuff to do.

Crimson Moon: As a musician what advice can you give to fellow musicians just starting out?
Jennifer: Practice.

Crimson Moon: What does the future hold for the band?
Jennifer: I will continue writing and working on more material, developing the sound and expanding on it. I have my sights set on releasing a full-length in 2023, as well as working on a live set.
