Culture Of Digital Elegance (C.O.D.E)

Crimson Moon: How did the band get started?

Vicky: Yiannis, Miltos and I met during studies at the same University and Elias joined the band later. We all had different musical backgrounds so we began to experiment and the band was born.

Crimson Moon: What kind of music do you play?

Yiannis: Our sound is a blend of rock attitude with electronic music elements and more. Generally we experiment with different styles regardless of genre.

Crimson Moon: How has the fan response been?

Vicky: Fan fact… It is interesting that different songs of ours have very different fans. From die hard rockers to synth enthusiasts. We love this! We have songs for everybody!

Crimson Moon: Where did the band name come from?

Yiannis: The name started as just CODE but we liked the idea of it having a secondary meaning so using the same letters we came up with the name Culture Of Digital Elegance in an attempt to relate to the whole digital revolution era.

Crimson Moon: Introduce the band members.

Vicky: Yiannis Katsaros on the guitars, Miltos Schimatariotis on the synths, Elias Goulas on drums, and I, Vicky Fysika on the lead vocals.

Crimson Moon: How many albums/CD’s have you released?

Yiannis: We have released 2 full length albums, 2 EP’s and a single.

Crimson Moon: Tell me about some of the songs on the latest CD?

Vicky: The album demonstrates many of our music references and is an important chapter for us, as we followed different sound and musical paths, something we have been pursuing for quite some time. A highlight in the album would definitely be our collaboration with Raphael Weinroth-Browne (Leprous)  in the song “Begin” where he played beautiful cello parts. Also, the first song of the album “Sinner Art” which describes the fragile relationship between the artists and their art is very special to us.

Crimson Moon: Who writes the music? Lyrics?

Yiannis: The initial music structure of our songs is usually written by Vicky and I. Then the rest of the band contributes ideas and parts. The lyrics are mostly by me with the help of Vicky on some songs.

Crimson Moon: And where do the lyric ideas come from?

Yiannis: The better part of our lyrics refers to inner battles and the pursuit of mental balance but there are also references to personal experiences such as in “City Polluted” which was written about the city where the band was created. Additionally, there are references to societal matters in tracks such as “Perfect Toy”, “Change” and “Words”.

Crimson Moon: Has the Covid Pandemic impacted the band at all?

Vicky: Covid impacted rehearsals and live shows. On the other hand we managed to finish our album during the pandemic.

Crimson Moon: Do you have any side projects?

Vicky: I write music and do sound design for my game development studio “Pixel Reign”. Yiannis also plays guitar and mixes all the music for Pixel Reign. Miltos releases some electronic music under the name “MLT”. Elias, has a new personal project coming up and also he plays for the band “Birthmark”.

Crimson Moon: What is the music scene like where you guys are from?

Yiannis: There are a lot of great bands in Greece but the support from the music system is very limited. Bands with non Greek lyrics do not catch a break very often. Also, being a small country the audience is small too.

Crimson Moon: Who are some of your musical influences?

Vicky: A Perfect Circle, Muse, Korn, Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead, System Of A Down, Infected Mushroom, Massive Attack, Portishead, Hooverphonic, Prodigy, Leprous, Sevendust, Guano Apes to name a few.

Crimson Moon: What is the band like when you play live?

Yiannis: Our songs carry a lot of emotions and intense parts so our live performances are quite dynamic.

Crimson Moon: Have you guys ever played in another country?

Vicky: Not yet, but we would love to of course.

Crimson Moon: What made you want to be in this band?

Yiannis: We liked the concept of blending different styles and not following a particular genre.

Crimson Moon: If you weren’t in this band would you still be involved in the music industry?

Vicky: Music is something we do because we love it. So, yes probably.

Crimson Moon: As a musician what advice can you give to fellow musician just starting out?

Yiannis: Start young and do not worry if your friends and family like what you do. Just do your thing.

Crimson Moon: What does the future hold for the band?

Vicky: Hopefully some live shows!
